    History :

    - Alex McGruer is known for having designed some of the toughest and
safest coastal cruisers afloat, albeit some of his designs have been
labelled, with a fair degree of accuracy, as ugly. For example, it is
safe to say that the Grampian 26 or 23 has looks which only McGruer's
mother (or a Grampian owner) could love. But if you're looking for
pocket cruisers that will go the distance, like heavy winds and offer
standing room, McGruer is the designer you want.

One of McGruer's little known gems is the Challenger, of which just
over 800 hulls were built in Canada from about 1973 - 1980. The
Challenger, at 24 feet and 8' beam, offers 5'11" headroom in the
salon and head, a semi private head and v-berth, galley with icebox,
sink and plumbing, bunks for six - although four would be more than
crowded on a boat this size - and huge storage capacity, especially
if it is an outboard version. Some of the later versions offer an
anchor locker. A few are found with wheel steering. Many have been
    retrofitted with furlers.

Weighing in at 4000 pounds, the Challenger carries 2090 of that in an
iron keel, giving it a ballast ratio of 51%. That translates into a
boat which loves heavy winds and will stand up to 20 knots plus under
full sail while heeling barely to the rails and roaring along at six
    knots.

Under light winds, you need a 135 - 150 genoa for any respectable
performance but this is not a sail you would keep up on her once the
winds get above 10 - 12 knots, where you'll furl some of this in.
Above this, your working jib will carry the load just fine up to over
20 k. Over 20 knots, you'll reef the main and take in some jib and
she'll stay upright and sailing at hull speed.
